Engle, M., & Lopez, R. (2015). Drum dream girl: how one girls courage changed music. Boston , NY: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Summary:

Drum Dream Girl dreamed of playing the drums, but on the island of music, the city believed that only boys should play drums. So, she decided to keep dreaming of playing the drums in silence. She will make her drum rhythm everywhere she went even though she was continually being reminded that playing the drums was for boys that didn't stop her from playing conga drums. Her sisters invited her to play the drums in their new all-girl band, but her dad said only boys play the drums. Her dad told her that he would find her a teacher who could decide if she was good enough. The teacher helped her practice and got better. She finally played at a cafe, and that is when everyone agreed that girls should be allowed to play the drums as well.

Strength:

The book teaches children to never give up on your dreams. Some people will want to put you down by telling you that you can't do something but keep on dreaming and don't give up. The illustrations are full of color, and the children will love the story that it is portraying.
