Scieszka, J., & Smith, L. (1995). Math curse. New York, NY: Viking.

Summary:

Monday morning, when she got math class, her math teacher told the students that everything could be thought of as a math problem. The next day she woke up to everything in her daily routine is a math problem. It started with at what time she woke up to how much time she has to get ready, then how much milk she needs to pour into her bowl of cereals, to how many students were on the bus. She starts believing that her math teacher put a math curse on her. Every subject and class she went to school became a math problem. She is becoming a math zombie and a math lunatic. Even the essential thing as having dinner with her family becomes a math problem. She finally gets the answer to her problem and becomes free of her math curse.

Strength:

This book was entertaining to read. The fact that a student is going crazy because everything she is doing she is seeing it as a math problem is entertaining. The students will learn some math concepts from the book, as well. It will teach them that math is used in everyday life, no matter the situation. The illustration of the book shows the reader how the girl feels about the math curse she thinks she has.
